France Announce Squad for UEFA Nations League Semi-Final Against Spain; Kylian Mbappé Included
France head coach Didier Deschamps has announced his squad for the UEFA Nations League semi-final against Spain, set for Wednesday, June 5, in Stuttgart, Germany. Among the notable inclusions is 21-year-old Rayan Cherki, who has earned his first senior call-up after a standout season with Lyon, where he played a key role in the club’s attacking resurgence.
However, Les Bleus will be without key defenders Jules Koundé and William Saliba. Koundé is sidelined with a thigh injury, while Saliba misses out due to a hamstring issue.
Should France progress, they will face either Germany or Portugal in the final on June 8, with the third-place match scheduled for the same day.
The French squad features several players who are set to compete in the Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan on May 31, including Marcus Thuram, Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Benjamin Pavard, and Lucas Hernandez.
Despite the demanding schedule, Deschamps is confident his players will rise to the occasion.
“I don’t need to motivate them. Spain is arguably the best European team—perhaps even the best in the world—with incredibly high-performing players,” said Deschamps. “Barcelona aren’t in the Champions League final, so their players may be fresher. Of course, Lamine Yamal stands out—he’s exceptional—but he’s not the only one we need to watch. We know exactly how strong this Spanish team is.”
