Luka Modric to leave Real Madrid after Club World Cup finale
Luka Modric, the veteran Croatian midfielder and 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, has confirmed he will leave Real Madrid at the end of the current season, following the club’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign this summer.
The 39-year-old will make his final La Liga appearance at the Santiago Bernabéu when Real Madrid take on Real Sociedad in their last league fixture of the season.
Since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, Modric has become a central figure in Real Madrid’s modern era of success. Over more than a decade at the club, he has won an impressive 28 trophies, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns, solidifying his legacy as one of the club’s all-time greats.
Real Madrid will kick off their FIFA Club World Cup campaign on June 18 against Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal, with group stage matches also set against Mexico’s Pachuca and Austria’s RB Salzburg.
Ahead of the tournament, Luka Modric confirmed his departure from the club with an emotional message on Instagram.
“The moment has arrived. The moment I never wanted to come, but that’s football, and in life everything has a beginning and an end,” Modric wrote.
Reflecting on his journey, he said, “I arrived in 2012 with the hope of wearing the jersey of the best team in the world and the ambition to do great things, but I couldn’t have imagined what came next.”
“Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a footballer and as a person. I’m proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history.”
Luka Modric will leave Real Madrid as one of its most iconic players, having made 590 appearances, scored 43 goals, and provided 95 assists. Despite playing a reduced role this season, his legacy at the club remains unmatched.
In 2018, after leading Real Madrid to a Club World Cup final and a Champions League triumph over Liverpool, Modric broke the decade-long dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo by winning the Ballon d’Or—becoming the first player since 2007 to do so.
